It is not a very difficult thing to steer a ship, at least a clipper, and yet, unless the greatest care be taken, she will soon be falling to lee-ward. Constant attention must be paid to the compass. In like manner every man, who would make a safe and prosperous passage over the ocean of life, must steer by the compass. In other words, Faith and Conscience must always act together. Conscience, if she has fair play, will always keep your faith right; and when sometimes the hand of faith trembles with doubt, conscience, if allowed to speak, will give her new confidence, you will hear a voice behind you saying, "This is the way, walk thou in it." More than this, the movement of the helm must be regulated by the chart. This chart is the word of God. No vessel can be rightly steered where due attention is not given to the compass and the chart; and no man's life, whatever his faith may be, can be either safe or successful, unless the voice of conscience is listened to, and unless the. Bible becomes a light to his path. Tou often say, or hear it said--Let every one steer by his own compass--a most excellent rule, one which cannot be violated without trouble and disaster. But then, unless that compass--the conscience--be governed by the chart of the word of God, you will never succeed. Depend upon it, all through life you will never make a single good run, and when the voyage of life is over, you will find yourself in a very different latitude from that of "the better land."
